If you want to make a fancy document, don't use Notepad. If you like emphasizing words with italics or underlining, don't use Notepad. But if you want to make quick, brief notes or have somewhere to reformat copied text before pasting it elsewhere, Notepad's the best program for the job.
It has very few features - it can search a section of text, and automatically insert the current date and time - but that's about it. Its quick load time and clean interface, though, make it perfect for jotting down notes or drafting a document.
Notepad is also the perfect HTML editor - it doesn't try to write the code for you or critique your tag choices. Keeping a Notepad window open with the document-in-progress and a browser window open to view changes is a great way to practice HTML coding.
The program doesn't format things nicely for you; it can handle tab stops (which cannot be changed) and word wrap but that's all. Still, it's useful for making those quick jotted notes when you don't want to forget something. And because it handles only plain ASCII text, a file written in Notepad can be opened in pretty much any other text editor or word processor.
