| robndea's Full Review: Microsoft FrontPage 2000 |
Front Page is good for individuals, sole-proprietors, and small contractors who need a basic web page. Front Page is probably not the best software for large businesses that have the resources available to hire a professional web developer. And, if you can afford that kind of money, you won't care that this product is usually also available for a bit less than the $150 list price at some of the auction web sites. But, if you are a small business person who doesn't mind getting your feet wet dabbling in web-design, this product ain't half bad!
Microsoft may be a bit of an arrogant giant who appears to believe theirs is only version of...you name it: operating system, Internet browser, etc., (at least, there is a certain judge who believes this is true). But, I also believe Microsoft has become adept at aiming for the "average guy" market in addition to the professional market.
The only web experience I brought to my current position was the ability to surf the net...yet I was expected to maintain a web site developed by a former employee using Front Page. Now, it isn't Ebay or CNN or HealthCentral, but our little web site is working well and serving the purpose for which it was designed. I was so pleased with how easy it was to use, I have purchased Front Page to build my personal web pages.
The interface is friendly and familiar, using many of the typical Microsoft interface options (such as tool tips), familiar toolbars, and familiar commands. I did run into my first bug attempting to set up a marquee (a sort of banner) which is not supported in Netscape. Consequently, I’ve discovered a few good support sites such as www.deja.com (microsoft/frontpage) and http://support.microsoft.com/support where I can sometimes resolve these problems.
Front Page might like to develop a help key for users like me…some sort of a large sign that pops up and says: “READ THE BOOK!”, but I persist in using the trial and error method of web design, and it seems to be working just fine.
