| MichaelHatton's Full Review: 3dfx Voodoo4 4500 |
I recently upgraded my Savage 4 video card which stugled playing Midtown Madness demo. The very recent Voodoo 4 4500 was at a computer fair for the first time, the 5500 was there but extra money. So I went for the bargain Voodoo 4 4500 at £100 ($150-170). The first step was to install the drivers for the card, then shut down then instert card , power up and thats it, the operating system (Windows) will detect it but won't ask for drivers, there allready there. So easy to install.
Next the benchmarking...
Now playing Midtown Madness as I said was a little slow on the Savage 4 graphics, but at the same setting the Voodoo had no problems. Even before I set the motherboard to 4x it seemed fine!!!
You can see the full review from SharkyExtreme @ http://www.sharkeyextreme.com/hardware/reviews/video/3dfx_voodoo4_4500_agp/
The benchmarks show a 73.2 frames per second on 1024x768 res in a AMD Duron 700. Not bad for the price.
In my exerience the card has not reached its limits...yet
The card is good, actually very good. But for about 60-£100 more you could have a better one. But a bargain is a bargain.
Now the specs
Proccesing
166MHz core clock
.25 micron process
Two pixels per clock
One texture per pixel per clock
333 million pixels per second
333 million texels per second
AGP 2x/4X support with fast writes
PCI model available
Memory Subsystem
128-bit SDR memory bus
166MHz SDR SDRAM
~2.7GBps memory bandwidth
32MB of memory
3D Features
2-sample FSAA
32-bit color rendering
32-bit texture rendering pipeline
24-bit floating point depth buffer (Z&W)
8-bit stencil buffer
2048x2048 texture support
FXT1 and DXTC texture compression
palletized texture support
whew!
Now waht really matters is the quality of the images, and I can tell you that the look totally different, much brighter and sharper than ever, playing Quake III is no longer a setup so the brightness is high, it has to be put lower! But the game looks very different.
I recommend it, it is very good. A bargain but games junkies may want more FPS. It does have a fan though...
Its good for DVD too.
