Packing Your Computer For A Move
Jun 19 '00
Sorry if this is in the wrong category, but there seemed to be no member advice area for this topic. I am discussing some tips for packing and moving your computer. I recently moved across country, and needed to pack up two computers, monitors, and printers, and get them safely to my destination.
I had a moving truck, and in this moving truck, there was a ledge built into the truck. I thought this was the perfect place to put my computer boxes, which were the first items on the truck.
Packing computer CPU's is a delicate business. I had made the mistake of throwing away my original boxes, and had to search around town for appropriately sizes boxes to pack my components. I then set out to find as much styrofoam pieces as I could find.
I went to some computer stores, like Best Buy and Staples, and asked for any of their old styrofoam that they packed TV's with, monitors, etc. I even asked friends and neighbors to save their styrofoam pieces when the bought a new television or appliance.
When I got ready to pack the CPU's, I knew it was important to allow for no movement of the unit, and to provide plenty of insulation. I cut my styrofoam pieces, to fit the units, then used more styrofoam in the boxes to stabilize the pieces and to provide for more insulation. I then rolled up some of my clothes, and stuffed them around the front, sides, and edges of the boxes. This provided further insulation and also saved some space in my suitcases.
I followed the same proceedure for packing my monitors, then used some purchased bubble wrap for packing speakers and keyboards in a seperate box.
By placing my components in plain cardboard boxes, I also avoided advertising to all of my new neighbors that I had computers, and no one guessed that I was moving in with two computer components.
It was good to put my computer components on the moving truck first, because they were insulated by further furnishings and my bed matresses. This kept the boxes from moving around, and the ledge on the truck, kept my boxes from sitting on the floor of the moving truck which has a lot of vibration and jerking of it's own. Yes, all of my components, parts and pieces made it just fine from California all the way to Georgia.
It is crucial upon moving your computers that you follow an earlier Epinion advice, and open your computer CPU to check wires and hook ups before turning on your unit or attempting to use it after transporting it. Many times in transport, wires and plugs work loose inside on the motherboard, and you can seriously damage or fry your motherboard if you do not check inside your CPU before turning it on. Please make sure that all plugs and wires are firmly in place, and all of your plug ins are firmly attached. You will get error messages and components will not work properly if not firmly plugged in.
Moving computers need not be so terrifying if you just remember to follow the needed proceedures to safeguard your investments properly.
