| Cosine's Full Review: ATI XPERT 99 |
NOTE: I am reviewing the 8mb version, I think there was a 16mb version as well.
ATI has always made high quality cards, both their 2D and 3D performance are usually solid. The Xpert99 card, based on the Rage 128 chip is a nice card for most users who don't need a blazing fast card but who want to do some gaming on the side.
The reason I go the card was price, in order to step up to a signifigantly faster card I would have had to shell out about three times as much money, I don't need killer performance and couldn't afford it anyway.
The card itself is quite well constructed with an attractive black heatsink embossed with the RAGE128 logo. I have seen some OEM video cards that don't fit their slots (particularily AGP cards) or which have obviously cheap solder jobs on them, this sort of thing has never been a problem with any ATI card I've seen.
2D performance with the Xpert99 is great, windows draw quickly and text is razor sharp, when viewed side by side with a cheaper SiS6326 based card the differences are quite noticable. Even though the Xpert99 isn't really targeted at the hard core gamer (look to an ATI Radeon card or any GeForce2 based card) it still ran QuakeIII Arena at 1024x768 on a 500mhz machine just fine.
