I was ready, willing, and able to purchase, own, and play a GeForce 256 card. I'd saved up enough extra money and was on my way to pricewatch.com to order a 3D Prophet and sell my Riva TNT on ebay.
Until I found out that my compaq 5304 doesn't have an AGP slot. That left me with very few choices. A M64 Riva TNT2 (scaled down TNT2), a Savage3 card, or the Voodoo3 3000 PCI.
I chose wisely. I order the V3 3k. The other two, I'm fairly certain, would've never matched up to what I see. There is a HUGE difference between the TNT1 that I owned and my new V33k...and..it's PCI.
Yes, yes, I will eventually just buy a new motherboard with AGP. But the v33k should do me quite well for some time. The frame rate is fantastic, I can finally run 3d games without the screen jumping here and there, and everything looks fantastic.
So, it doesn't have 32bit support. So what? The only real games that truly use 32bit support are the VERY newest ones - and even those, you need a GeForce to truly appreciate the 32bit color.
Besides - v33k is not some generic whitebox manufacturer. The knowledge base is excellent (and not spread throughout the web like runny butter...or like TNT support).
For PCI users, the v33k is essentially your ONLY choice. But it's not a bad one. The price is quite reasonable right now (thanks to the ever nearing release of the voodoo4) and it should provide anyone on a budget sufficient eyecandy for a while.
