My eMachine is dead and gone
Sep 17 '00
I have read a many opinions on eMachines since January when I came to Epinions. I only wish I had read them BEFORE purchasing one last September. My thought to those few who like them: I am so glad that your computer is working....My thought for everyone who also got lemons: Welcome to the club.
In my monthly travels to Florida I decided to buy a new computer for down there instead of carrying my outdated laptop along each trip. I went to a Gateway store first and found out that you had to order your computer. Since I am only down there for a few days a month and wasn't sure of the exact dates of my next trip, the delivery wouldn't work out. My next stop was Best Buy. I have always purchased my computers at Best Buy because of their great sale prices.
The first system I picked out was a HP on sale for about $1100.00 before rebates. I found a salesman and showed him what I wanted. He immediately said "have you ever had an eMachine?" I had never even heard of eMachines. He explained that they are built from refurbished manufacturer returned components. They have a one year warranty and Best Buy will exchange them at no cost if you have a problem. The same model as the HP I had picked out was also about $300.00 cheaper in an eMachine.
I finally decided to give it a try. I took it home, hooked it up, got online and everything worked great. I used it for about 10 days with no problems. I then left Florida for a month. I returned in October late in the evening. I never turned the computer on or used the phone, just went to bed. I was woke up the next morning by a neighbor who informed me that my mother had called her to come get me because my phone wasn't working and there was an emergency back home.
To make a long story short...The modem in the new eMachine had blown out and disabled the entire phone line. I took the eMachine back to Best Buy where the technician said "we see this all the time." I never did receive 1/2 of my eMachine rebates either. I exchanged the eMachine computer for another HP because there wasn't another eMachine that was comparable in price to the one that I had bought in stock. Since the monitor was fine, I kept that part of the original one.
Well, about 6 months later, I go down and turn the computer on and the monitor is only a small line across the middle of the screen. Back to Best Buy where another technician says "we see this all the time." Again I exchanged it for an HP.
I am just glad that all of this happened within the warranty period or I would have been really upset. My entire experience with eMachines was very irritating. When the computer worked, it was great but I will not buy another one ever.
I would suggest to anyone in the market for a new computer to spend a few extra dollars and get something new and not 'remanufactured', it will be well worth it in the long run.
