I love Napster because you can find almost any song that you are looking for.
Napster works as a buddy-buddy system, the files you are downloading come from someone's computer that is on line. Napster does not store any Mp3 files, you and I store them. They do not control what people have on there, so it is up to each individual to what we can find and download.
You select a download directory when you load up the Napster program. This directory is where Napster will automatically download the Mp3 files. This directory is also where people can download from you. If you don't want anyone to download from you, simply move the Mp3 file into another directory when it is done downloading. You can change the directory anytime you wish through the menu in the program.
CD Sales
Does it hurt the CD sales? That is questionable in my book, I am sure there are several people who won't buy a CD. They probably wouldn't buy one anyway, they would just wait till a friend has one and borrow it to make a copy.
Yes I have downloaded several myself. You take the group Creed, I heard a few of their tunes so I decided to download more to see how they sounded, since then I have bought their first and second CD because I like what I heard. I probably would not have bought them if I didn't know much about their music. I have bought so many CDs in the past and only like 1 or 2 songs on it, now with Napster I can listen to them to make the right decision on weather I want it or not. Yes there are a lot I don't buy because there are not enough good songs for me to want their CD.
Pros
1. Good Quality to listen too if they are a complete song and not into the next song.
2. You can sample the artist before buying the CD.
3. FREE for Now?
Cons
1. Downloading any Mp3 file is slow no matter where you download from if you have a slow Internet connection like my 56K or slower. You are lucky if have DSL, Cable, T1 or a T3 connection. DSL and Cable are not in my area and T1 and T3 are way to expensive to get and maintain.
2. The way they are compressed at different bit-rates bother me, they range from 60 to 256. I think that 128 would be a good standard for all Mp3 files.
3. Very few Mp3 files are exactly like the CD version, some are cut short of the song and some run too long and in a few cases they have started the next song.

My Last Thought
Napster is great but, please do support the artists and buy their CD if you like what they have. There is a good chance Napster will loose their battle in court but, if people stick together and support the artist by buying their CDs, maybe all Mp3 places on the Internet won't be closed down.
