| ldwalker59's Full Review: HP CD-Writer Plus 9300i Series |
Introduction
One day I was surfing around the web, and I decided that I wanted to get myself a CD-RW drive. I surfed to PC Magazine's site, and I looked at their "Top-10 CD-RW Drive" Chart it placed the HP 9300i drive way up there with its relative cheapness for speed being the main reasons. I thought what the heck I might as well purchase one and see what it can do.
Some Specs
Now don't get me wrong I wanted it for storage, but I also wanted to back up some of my more favorite games, such as Diablo II and Heroes of Might and Magic III. I found soon afterwards that I did not do enough research, and as I have seen in other reviews of this product on this site and others you cannot copy some of the hidden files and protection just plain takes out this drive. No matter what program you use this drive will not recognize them as files, and therefore it will not place them on the disk you are burning.
The software that comes with the drive works great for the drive the only problem there is that it defaults to 2x write when you place a disk in the drive. You just have to tell it that you want to record the disk later, and then go right back into the program where you can then up it to 10x if you are writing or 4x if you are rewriting.
I have to say that the 10x write capabilities make this puppy a wonder when you are making those audio CDs. I did the first couple of CDs on 2x and it took me close to an hour for each one, but when I upped it to 10 the burner was finished without an error within 5-10 minutes. I must say that I am impressed by the speed and functionality of this device when you use it for audio.
The 4x rewrite capabilities is still fast enough to copy files from your harddrive quicker than you could to a floppy not to mention with much more size and range of files being stored.
Summary
All in all, I thought the drive was well made, but they could have put out one that could recognize files so that you can back up your games. I do know that that could result in some pirated copies and what not, but it isn't like there aren't other drives out there that can do that. That was the only real complaint I had. I have not lost any CDs due to a bad burn other than the two I attempted to use for a copy of a game before I read the reviews here.
