Well, after my pathetic Acer died after 3 years of faltering, but faithful service, I decided to buy another computer. OK.. let's face it, I'm addicted to the Internet, and I was jonesing really bad. So, being that I'm a super saucy college student, I started off with Computer Shopper, the ONLY computer buying magazine you'll need. Maybe i should write a review about them too, oh wait, already have =]
Anyway, I started off trying to think what I wanted. At the time, last summer, they had JUST come out with Pentium III's 500MHZ. So new some stores didn't even have them. bottom line is, I didn't want the pentium 3's, cause of that Big Brother Chip (I read all about it in computer shopper they're mad helpful) so I decided on a 400 MHz Pentium 2. That made things easy.
Then, I decided that my major interests were online, so I wanted a fast modem, big Hard drive, and lotsa ram. (I planned on being on AOL, burning CDs, and being in IRC getting lotsa of mp3 files.) I found an awesome deal on ABS's magazine ad. What I got was a pentium 2 400 mgz, 13 gig, 128 meg ram system, 40x CDROM, speakers, and all this, for 1204 bux delivered overnight from California.
And I have never looked back, it's a wonderful system, and believe me, when I'm online, and i'm TCP/IPing with EarthLink and AOL, I'm uploading and downloading on IRC, I'm web surfing, and printing, and sometimes I'm converting mp3s to wavs, and then burning them on my 4x4x16x SCSI CD-RW (I installed this and the SCSI card myself, the ABS guy truthfully told me the cd-rw drive they use wasn't very fast, and advised me not to get it, I appreciated that). So, it's an amazing system, awesome price, and I'm hap hap happy. This is what I'm trying to get across to people, that if you get a good system that has the right processor (Intel pentium, what else!) you could never go wrong. It's been a year now, and although I've upgraded the ram and hard drive I still have an amazing system that's always there when I need it.
