| ian_leicht's Full Review: Dell Inspiron 7000 A400LT |
I am currently on my second Inspiron 7000. I purchased my first one about a year ago. When 400mhz models became available, I upgraded to a newer model.
Screen:
I love the 15" screen. The new version of the video card allows you to drive two monitors. Unfortunately, because it only has 8mb of RAM, I can drive only drive one monitor at 1280x1024 and another at 1024x768 at 16bit color. It would be nice if I could do 1600x1200 at 32bit color. I've had some problems interfacing the laptop with our proxima projector. I'm hoping that I can get some help from tech support on this issue when I get a chance. The TV outputs are nice - great for on the road presentations. With the GL drivers, you can actually get decent FPS playing GL-Quake.
Base Features:
The battery life is reasonable. The computer performs well. I've ordered both of my 7000s with 192MB of memory. The new "bay switching" software allows you to swap out the DVD drive for the ZIP drive while the computer is running. This doesn't always work smoothly though. I hate the mousepad. I usually use an external mouse.
DVD:
I use my laptop as my home entertainment center. I watch movies off of the screen, my monitor, and sometimes my TV. The new DVD4X drive doesn't support digital extraction. This is a bummer because I used to use my DVD1X drive on my old 7000 to rip MP3s.
Portability:
This is a not a light laptop. You will get a workout carrying it around.
Customer service:
My new 7000 has had a few problems. The first one they sent me had a defective motherboard that didn't work well with the DVD drive. Overall, customer support has been great. They have answered my questions, and when I have had problems, they sent me replacements rather quickly. I am able to purchase most of our company's Dell equipment online.
