| chugs's Full Review: Handspring Visor Prism Handheld |
This is now my 8th generation Palm device. I still lvoe the interface as it is the most user friendly of the PDA devices, in my opinion. The Prism is distinct in that it will handle full 16-bit color. The unit comes in a cobalt blue color and comes standard with 8MB of ram. This is also expandable with many different modules available, such as a phone, a GPS system, a modem, a pager and many others.
The technical specs of this unit are not as important in a review as the details of its use from a day to day users standpoint so I will focus on this.
The charger works with the USB cradle that is supplied. This unit replaced a Palm IIIc specifically because of the better display, the usb cradle and the faster charging. This unit fully charges in about 2 hours where the Palm IIIc can take as long as 18 hours. The cradle does have a design problem in that the unit does not sit in the cradle easily and does take some fiddling. The unit also has a nice little LED light which flashes until the unit becomes fully charged. Once it is charged, the light stays on.
The USB is a nice feature in that the syncing seems to occur about 4X faster from Handspring and I would concur. I have over 2000 names in my database and the first sync was much faster on the Prism than the IIIc.
The city time device is nice but it is really not useful unless you travel or work throughout the world. It seems to be there specifically to show off the color display's capabilities.
I switched to this unit specifically because I felt the technical support of Palm has gone down hill and feel that Handspring is in the best position to move forward. The unit is substantially heavier in weight but also in features. The width is greater than the IIIc but it is not noticeable unless you hold them side by side.
