Having registered my first domain name almost 2 years ago, I had no other choice but to use Network Solutions. Luckily for me, my ISP was willing do all the work for me; after all, I was paying them to host the site. I sat there and watched him navigate the site, fill out the forms, answer a few questions, and 10 minutes later he was done and said it should be up and working in 48-72 hours. It was.
It wasn't until recently that I had the pleasure of dealing with Network Solutions a second time. I was in the process of moving my site and needed to update my domain to reflect the web host. I proceeded to Network Solutions' web site and attempted to update domain. Finding the area to make changes was easy enough, but determining the correct forms to use was another matter. After ending up in the wrong place numerous times I found myself scratching my head asking myself 'is it REALLY this difficult to modify a nameserver?' When I finally found the right form, I filled in the info, sent the form, and waited for the email response. When it came I cut and pasted the form to a new email and sent it from the email address listed for the domain. A short while later I got an automated response stating that there were errors. Errors? The body of the email was generated by Network Solutions themselves! Luckily they included a link to a text document that explained what the error code meant. Too bad the error number they gave me didn't appear in the text document. Being in denial, and not wanting to believe that the email was wrong, I sent a new email, only to get the same automated response. Not knowing what to try next I set it aside and decided to try it again in the AM. The next morning I went back to Network Solutions, filled out the forms again, and waited for the email, which I then cut and pasted again, emailed and sat there waiting for the automated message telling me there were errors. I was not disappointed, a short while later, it turned up again!
That was enough for me, I was done with Network Solutions. I pointed and clicked my way to Dotster (you can read my review of them) filled out their registrar transfer request form, faxed it along with my driver’s license and signed authorization and never looked back. Twenty four hours later they were handling my domain and 3 days and 1 email later I was able to manage my domain through my existing Dotster acct.
