After buying a headset/microphone combination for my computer, I waited in anticipation of its arrival, counting the days until I could finally try out the service of Dialpad.com I had heard good things and I wanted to see if the free long-distance calling was a reality.
Upon hooking up my headset, I pointed my browser to Dialpad and put it through some test runs. Disappointingly, Dialpad was unable to live up to my expectations and I no longer attempt to use the service (there are better options).
Pros:
-The obvious allure of Dialpad's service is that it's free. On this count, I must give them credit. They are not, however, the only ones out there. Visitalk.com has a similar product, but keep reading for the best program.
-Dialpad is fairly intuitive and easy-to-use. It has a clean interface and pleasing colors.
Cons: (only one, but it's a biggie)
-Sound quality on calls is often poor. Despite having a fast, dedicated connection, I was unable to achieve the level of quality I look for and need when making calls home or to far-flung friends.
Verdict: I'm not ready to write off Dialpad just yet. It has a future as it expands its server capacity and as broadband becomes faster and more widely available. For the time being however, the service is not up to par.
Alternative: My recommendation for free long-distance is a new service called I-Link. It can be found at:
http://weblink.i-link.net/
I-Link uses a different premise. Instead of calling from your computer, their computer system calls you and then connects you to the party you are calling. In turn, you must remain by your computer to click on ads every 3 minutes. Not a bad deal if you have a dedicated internet connection!
