I purchased my Sony CDRW Drive because it is an external drive, and because it uses the USB port. Both of these features made it portable, and ideal for use with my laptop. After owning it for about a year...its transportability has been a big plus for me (and my friends who don't own burners!)
This is a good buy for anyone with a laptop for a few reasons. First, it is much more economical than a SCSI type (which requires an adapter as well). Second, it does not have many of the problems associated with parallel ports (such as interfering signals during computer printer checks, etc.).
Also, the sony was a fairly affordable buy, at $300 (now you can get them for around $200!) for and external drive.
There are some problems with the Sony that a consumer should be aware of, though. First, it sometimes seemingly incompatible with Microsoft Explorer. Both the DELL Desktop and Toshiba laptops that I use frequently jam up while using the drive. When you have a blank disc in the drive, the Sony sends a signal to the computer, but explorer jams up when trying to explore the blank disc. The way to overcome this is to select all your files to write BEFORE even plugging the drive into the USB port.
Another problem with the Sony purchase is the program, Sony Hotburn, that comes with it. The program took a long time for me to completely understand, and now I realize that it lacks complete control of how a disk is written.
If at all possible, I would recommend buying an internal drive (if you have a desktop). Otherwise, be ready to face some frustration and ruined discs with something like the Sony Spressa USB CD-RW Drive.
