I'm not going to go into the whole controversy of Napster vs RIAA... that's another review, that I may or may not write. But it doesn't belong here. What I will tell you is what Napster IS.. since not everyone seems to know what it is and what it does.
First, let me start off by saying Napster does NOT give away music for free! They are a totally FREE service! They don't get any money from anyone for their revolutionary program and service.
Napster is a program which you download to your computer. It catalogs all the mp3's on your hard drive, and you can tell it which folders of music you want to "share" and which ones you don't. Then when you log onto Napster's services, it shows everyone online what MP3's you've decided to share, and allows you to see what everyone else ont he Napster service has decided to share.
That's all they do! It's a networking tool, that also doubles as a search engine of other people's computers. Now this may sound a little scary, but remember, each person who logs onto the service has told Napster which folders on their hard drive they WANT to share with the rest of the Napster users. So if you've got something that you don't want to share, or shouldn't, then you don't HAVE To share it.
Once you've logged onto Napster, it takes a short time (depending on YOUR connection speed) for Napster to find all your MP3's and share them. Then you can chat with other users, and search for other MP3's to download. You can search for music by title of the song, by the band name, or by the user's name.
Once you've done a search, you'll get a long list (depending on how popular the song/band your searching for) of users who have that song your looking for. Then you select which one you want to download (hint: select the users who are on a DSL connection or higher) and then hit download. voila! YOu've just used Napster for the first time and you're downloading your MP3 :)
NOw that wasn't hard was it? hehehehe Napster does NOT control what the users share through their service. It's VERY simple to keep from sharing copyrighted material, so that should NOT be their concern or problem. Unfortunatly, the RIAA doesn't see it this way, which will end up being too bad for them... oh but I said I wasn't going to get into that in THIS review, heh, sorry!
As you can see, Napster is a program that allows you to share your MP3's with other users with ease. It's truly a great program! I'd suggest everyone should try it :)
