| gerstein's Full Review: Apple Mac OS 9 |
I've had OS 9 for just about 5 months now, and I don't have a problem with anything. It's all native PowerPC language, so it's fast on older machines and absolutely flies on the newer models. With the various "Assistants" that come with it, it's easy to install a new OS and configure it to suit your needs. And the best part? Software Update.
By having the machine check in with Apple (either on a schedule or whenever you want), you can get the latest and greatest software at any time. The best part? It's free and wicked easy to do. Click to check for updates, select any updates that are available and you want to install, and then you're done - the computer does almost everything else for you. In some cases, you don't even need to restart when it's done! (although I would recommend it anyway). If you've got broadband at home or in the office, I suggest having your machine check once a week for updates. It certainly beats having to check Apple's sites for information every day.
Another nice feature of OS 9 is the Keychain. You can have all your passwords (for websites, email, network accessable volumes, encrypted files) stored in the keychain, so you don't have to worry about remembering every single password you've ever had. And if you need to know what the actual password is, Apple makes sure that you're the right person before displaying it in plaintext: you have to verify you're the owner to see the plaintext passwords by entering the keychains password. A nice touch!
Yet another stand-out feature: file-sharing over TCP/IP. Sure, you can buy the AppleShare IP software if you want to share over IP for a large number of clients, but if you work in a small office (or are sharing a small LAN), then you'll want to take advantage of the speed that IP copies give you. And it's very easy to set up - just check another box while you're turning on file sharing in the first place.
Over all, a very good product that can only improve with time.
