I make frequent trips home to MN to visit my mother, who doesn't have a computer. So when I was in the market for a new computer, I wanted to get a laptop that I could bring with me and still check email. Funds were an issue, though, and all of the laptops I found were too expensive. We ended up driving up to the Best Buy in Atlanta to look and we found my ThinkPpad iSeries 1411 on sale for $1599. We got the 3 year service plan for free ($150 value) so it was a really great deal.
It was also very important to me to have everything already in the computer. I didn't want to have to switch drives every time I wanted to use a CD or a floppy. It had to have a modem and a big enough hard drive. While the drive can always be bigger, I've found that 4.1 gig has been plenty so far. The 56K modem has been fast. The track point mouse didn't take much time to get used to at all, and you can always plug in a real mouse if you so choose.
Six months or so after we bought it, we ran in to a problem. When I turned the computer on, it froze at the start up screen (where it shows the ThinkPad logo). There was a continuous beep, so I looked in the manual and it said to call tech support. They were VERY helpful and knowledgeable. He said they needed to see it, and I could either bring it to a local dealer (Circuit City was our only choice - THAT is another review!) or they would overnight us a box, we could send it to them and have it back in three days. We figured CC could do it faster and ended up going that route. Like I said, that is a whole other review, but the problems we had there were not IBMs fault. The computer was fixed (they replaced the hard drive) and I haven't had that problem (or any other major ones) since.
The only problem I ran in to was that when I left it on every night (like I always did with my desktop) it tended to get bogged down a lot. So we started shutting it down at night and while we're at work, and it doesn't lag anymore.
Overall, I love my ThinkPad!
