The Future

Three years ago, if you asked the common folk or looked in a magazine, you would discover tales of woe about Apple. You would hear tales of the company's losses financially and the peril of it. You couldn't go a week without hearing details of the company and how it was "on its last leg." Times change.
Today you hear of tales of pleasure, delight, and prosperity pertaining to Apple. You hear tales of prosperity with Apple in lieu of tales of Steve Jobs and his genius, both through marketing and through Apple itself. In my opinion, what saved Apple from falling into the abyss was the return of Jobs. Jobs not only signaled a change in the way Apple functioned, but he ushered in a new age of Apple’s morale and a time of renaissance.
In the next year, along with many other technical and social advances with the ways we view technology, we will see even more of a rebirth in Apple. I believe Apple will not only release new products, but it will release products that change the way people function and live. These products will pioneer and lead the way to a new existence of living. With the introduction of some product, I will speculate on later in this article about, Apple will usher in the second renaissance in the field of computing.
The first product, which I will discuss, may be the most important. Software! Software is like the proverbial glue that bonds everything together. With this software, the Macintosh Platform will expand to the superior software that it is. The software I am speaking of is Mac OS X. Mac OS X will be a revolutionary software which will someday be hailed among one of the greatest technical achievements that pioneered life as it is today. The reason for this is simply its architecture. You may believe it is like the traditional "Big Brother-type" upgrade, a new colorful bunch of pictures over an archaic operating system. Well then, my friend, you are mistaken. This system will utilize one of the most powerful tools of the 20th Century, UNIX! This system will revolutionize the way we use computers. We will essentially have the software of a supercomputer with the user-friendly Mac interface we all love.
My next topic of discussion is the hardware involved. It is inevitable in the evolution of hardware and G3 and G4 processors that there will be advancements made. With the partnership between IBM and Motorola, it is very likely that they will introduce G3 processors with clock speeds up to 600 MHz. The G3 processor will most likely be mainly used on the consumer –oriented products, i.e., the iMac and iBook Families.
This brings us to the next topic, the G4 processor. This topic is one of much interest. In the late fall of 1999, Apple introduced the G4 in its entirety. This was, in my opinion, a magnificent achievement. This was a major improvement of its predecessor the G3. The G4 is estimated to break speeds well beyond 500 MHz in the spring of this year. With this advancement and the production of these computers in full gear, Apple’s plans for the G4 will take off.
In the summer of this year, Apple will most likely introduce Dual or Quad processor G4s. Just think of it, four G4s running at 500MHz each. This is a very important advance. This gargantuan amount of speed with the power of Mac OS X will enable every user to take full advantage of the power before him or her.
These are just some of the twists and turns which may lie in Apple’s future. A good company can be determined by its life, both in good times and bad. Apple has had some insanely great things happen to it and some insanely bad things happen to it also. Moreover, it has remained stalwart with its goal. It is my belief that a company this strong with this much determination, will ride this self created wave of insight and cunning far into the 21st Century and will be a major player in the tech industry of tomorrow.
