my problematic emachine history

Dec 13 '00

I have owned an emachine etower 466 id celeron for 10 months now.
The price was great and things were ok at first. For some people it still might be a right choice for them but be very careful. Whatever you do, by all means purchase an extended service warranty, it will more than pay for itself in your calls to their service department.(Otherwise, it is about $20 per question). They also have no toll free number for their repair calls so you'll be paying quite a bit of toll phone calls in my opinion.

Emachines underpowers their machines. My power unit is an ATX 120 watt they told me. It would shut the machine off unexpectedly after a time (about 44 min. if I was lucky). They replaced it with another ( I noticed how scratched up and used it was when it arrived). The replacement never worked at all from the start. They sent another ( I just received it this week). All this started in early Sept. and they are just now getting it resolved!! I waited weeks and weeks. They also lost all proof of my extended warranty agreement and fortunately I still had proof of purchase from my bank statement. I photocopied it and it was promptly lost again. They still haven't figured that out. The service people obviously just read from their books and don't seem to know anything. One even admitted they had never seen the inside of an emachine themselves. (I know more as a novice!!) I got so frustrated I finally asked some online experts for help and purchased my own beefed up power unit of 145 watts and installed it and have had no trouble at all since then.
For laughs you have to know that as I was talking to one of their helpers they told me that their machine had gone down and they couldn't answer my question! (Could they be using emachines also!!??)
For the price, you might do ok if you are looking primarily at price, but be ready for anything when it comes to problems. You need the patience of Job and your own creativity to come through sometimes.
