For $500 this blows away the HP inkjet that we are replacing. On photo-glossy paper the colors really stand out. Even on plain paper with default settings photos look good and print pretty fast. At the highest resolution, though, it is as slow as any inkjet but worth the wait. Some of the dithering looks odd up close, but from a distance photos look remarkably sharp. What I noticed immediately was that fields of color are consistently uniform - no banding or splotching.
With default printer settings and heavy inkjet paper, documents are crisp and bright. For papers with charts and graphs even these default settings will give you crisp, clear, almost laser-quality results.
The large paper tray is great for the occasional oversized printing job. The Epson software is easy to install. Normally, I am not thrilled with print drivers that insert themselves in front of the Windows print controls, but this works quite well.
It is very important to have a bi-directional printer cable and a parallel port set to EPP. Even though the parallel port on this PC was set to "bi-directional" in the BIOS, it needed to be set to EPP to communicate with the printer. The documents will print regardless, but the printer cannot communicate back to the PC without EPP. This is important because that is how the ink levels are displayed.
Photoshop LE is a nice add-in, but I kind of like the simple photo printing software that Epson packages with some of the lower end printers. Oh well, no big deal.
Not that you would get this printer for printing regular documents, but the text looks great also.
