| basilisk4's Full Review: Yahoo! Mail |
I bet Yahoo! just loves this category. After all, with 450 member ratings and all but a miniscule 5% or so who failed to recommend the service, this category is basically free advertisement for Yahoo! Mail. Having said that, I feel obligated to add my review to the already sizable stack of reviews on this topic because the service in question is just that good.
Comparatively speaking, I was somewhat late in jumping on the web-based e-mail bandwagon. I've been using the internet just about since its inception, and I've had e-mail through a reliable internet service provider (my Dad) that entire time. When I wanted a little more privacy, I gave out one of my various other shell account e-mail addresses or a school- or work-related address, all of which forwarded to my main mailbox. As a result, I've never had much use for web-based mail services.
All of that has changed over the past couple of years, however. In this day of such a proliferation of junk e-mail from all four corners of the earth, it's almost impossible to keep one's mailbox neat and tidy. That is, without Yahoo! Mail. Whenever I sign up for something on the web which requires an e-mail address, I simply give them my Yahoo! Mail address, and I have no worries about my main e-mail account being bombarded with junk mail.
For those of you who are unaware, Yahoo! Mail is accessible from anywhere you have access to a working browser and internet connection. The "Bulk Mail" folder, which many web-based e-mail services have started to use, is a decent means of screening out some of the junk e-mail you're sure to receive. This is the one downside to Yahoo! Mail, by the way -- you will get junk mail. Boy, will you get junk mail. Even if you never give that e-mail address to anyone, you can still probably expect to get at least 2-5 junk e-mails a day. (So, if you're really interested in "financial freedom in 5 days," "XXX young girls," or "accepting credit cards for your business in 24 hours," this service is even more beneficial!)
In a nutshell, Yahoo! Mail is the ideal web-based e-mail service. It's fast, free, simple, and in over a year and a half of use, I have yet to ever have a problem with the site being down or anything along those lines. This is an excellent choice for anyone who wants to be able to give out their e-mail address freely without having it come back to haunt them later.
