Just Shoot Me, Please!Jan 19 '00 Write an essay on this topic.I had the EXTREME displeasure of attempting to setup a very small LAN with these Demons disguised as computers..Let me tell you of my pain! I have been im PC's and Networking for over a decade, and I anticipated NO problems doing this. My client bragged about these new computers he bought for practically nothing! Well, I figured, Great! Let's do it! The problems began when we attempting installing Windows98, as we were going to install a small WorkGroup situation. BUZZZ! Wrong! First. The supposed "high-end network cards" COULD not be recognized by the Plug-n-Play BIOS, second, even after disabling the PNP in the BIOS and installing the drivers, the cards STILL couldn't be found by Windows98 Hardware manager... We finally got 1 of them to work by swapping in a NE2000 compatible Network card he had from an older system. The nightmares still continued. After getting the Network option set, and attempting to get the two PC's to see each other, the new eMachine CRASHED! The OS became unstable and would not boot! All in all, I wasted 12 Hours of my and my clients time, and I only charged half-fee. The client eventually bought Dells, and they worked out of the box! My recommendation? Only recommend these machines to people you no longer like and would love to see bald, because after an afternoon with these babies, they'll be pulling hair and begging you "Please! Just shoot me now!" Michael S Duffy -The TeckWizard |
