Ease of Use:
Pros:processor speed, cd-rw, dvd, ports on front
Cons:winmodem, soundcard, graphics card(sort of)
I have been saving for a Pc for well over two years. In the beginning i was planning on building my own with custom components, but I found this computer refurbished on ubid.com for $870. This is a well thougth out machine on the outside, but inside it is a very different story. In order to replace any cards, you must either remove the motherboard or take out the power supply. I would rather Have a full tower case instead of a midtower because the power supply blocks access to theses cards. Also, the soundcard that comes with this computer is very poor. It is not really a card anyway, it is built into the modem and produces loads of hiss and distorts the sound when you execute programs. The graphics is okay. It is based on Nvidia's Vanta chipset, which is old, but runs many games (including Quake3) at usable framerates. This computer comes with a 10/100 ethernet card and a 56k winmodem. The processor is so fast you will not notice a slowdown in programs because of the winmodem. A winmodem is not really a modem, it uses a program to modulate and demodulate the signals coming from the phone line, thus it uses up processor cycles. It also comes with 128mb of 133mhz ram, a 45 gigabyte harddisk, a 12x DVD-ROM drive and a 4x4x24 HP cd-writer.
This computer has two USB and one Serial port on the front of the chasis while it has the standard array of ports on the back. It utilizes a 900mhz AMD Athlon processor (non-thunderbird).
The computer runs Microsoft Windows ME and also comes with McAffe virusscan, Microsoft Works, and Music Match Jukebox.
Over all this is a very fast machine, but with a few quirks. It is certainly worth the $870 i paid, but i cannot justify spending $1500 dollars on it new.
