I purchased the HP 8100i about 3 years ago. Back then I didn't have much of a selection as I didn't have a scsi card and I had heard from friends the trouble with the Yamaha's. My first cd burnt was a remix cd done by a friend.
Installation was a breeze. Put it in the drive bay hooked up the cables and away I went. The only problem was with the Adaptec Easy Cd Creator Software. The version shipped with the unit didn't support the drive. But after a quick check at HP's website I was able to download the update for the package.
I have burnt well over 500 CD-R's and 30 - 40 CD-RW's. I have got very few coasters from the unit usually my fault. Bad CD-R's or I bumped my tower. The only down side was that the unit didn't support overburning. But as the price of 80min CD-R's have dropped I don't really notice it.
The drive came with one cd-r and one cd-rw a manual for 5 different languages and an extra cable.
The best thing about the unit was it hasn't failed. I know some people that purchased other drives from other manufactures and they have failed after two years. HP makes a quality product built on quality hardware.
