You get what you pay forNov 25 '00 Write an essay on this topic. My husband and I own a computer shop and have found many things we warn people about. We always want to let our potential customers know that cheap isn't always better. We would rather our customers spend slightly more money to begin with, knowing that they will get a computer that will give them years of use and can be upgraded as soon as its really needed. We don't like to see people throw their hard earned money in the trash, a computer shouldn't be like many other things in this day and age "throw away" because its not upgradable. It should be able to last through many children and lots of use. We like to suggest buying a computer that can be upgraded with universal parts. This simply means its not propriatary. If a computer can be upgraded with universal or generic parts it will normally be cheaper to upgrade saving you the consumer several hundreds of dollars. We won't sell a computer thats not upgraded with "generic" parts. Generic is good in the computer industry not a product of less quality. We invite you to check the cost involved in upgrading a "name brand" computer to a generic non-propriatary brand "generic". You can have a better upgradable computer when you buy a "generic" and the extra money can go for other items you really want. Sometimes, cheap (bargain, chain store computers) not the best. Go to a computer store where you, the customer is as important as the product. A place where the seller's not out to take you to the cleaners. Get a second opnion if your not comfortable with what the sellers trying to sell you, especially if you feel they are trying to sell you something that seems to be a over-kill (to much of a computer) or if they try selling you something that you know you will outgrow within a couple of months. Remember, they want you to come back real soon, upgrades can be expensive and if your machine can't be upgraded they get to sell you another computer, you will probably be disatisfied again in a few months. Remember service is important, you don't want to buy from a business that won't give you service after the sale. They usually don't honor your warranty,(make sure you get a good warranty). Bad stores tend to want you to mail the problem unit in for work to be done. They usually have no in- store or in-home service. They often forget, who you are when you walk out the door with your new purchase. And when you call with a problem they often give you a toll free number to call for help, (if your lucky). The store may also tell you they have in-home service, but you soon find out that your not in their area (something they forgot to tell you, especially if you bought an extended warranty for home service). Seems there is no end to the lies they will tell, just to get your hard earned dollar. Remember, you may pay slightly more but if you buy from a smaller (not chain store) computer store you will usually get someone who wants you as a satisfied customer, after all they have to depend on satisfied customers for their income. Most of the time locally owned smaller stores can give you a good deal and a great warranty and you'll find they stand behind what they say. |
