| JGillespie's Full Review: Dell Inspiron 3500 A400GT |
While I don't actually own a Dell Inspiron, we have three machines that serve as consoles at our Help Desk, so I am very familiar with this system.
I can definitely vouch for the Dell's reliability, as it has served excellently in it's capacity. Here on campus we service several varieties of laptops- everything from the ill-advised IBM thinkpad (referred to as "stinkpads" at my job) to the older P166 Microquest laptops (likewise very unreliable). The Dell Inspirons are the only laptops we have on campus which don't consistently have small glitches or problems. 6 GB of storage space is optional and highly recommended.
With 128MB of RAM the inspiron is more then capable of handling our office ticket programs, including Remedy and Banner. The net cardbus is exceptional but one complaint I have about it is that the patch dongle supplied with the system has an uncanny tendency to slip out of the port. Nevertheless, this is only a small complaint. As well, the slots provided for both the floppy drive and the CD-ROM are in needlessly awkward positions.
The processor speed is excellent (333 base), and the active matrix screen (about 12' inches) provides a large crisp display. All in all the Dell Inspiron is one of the better laptops on the market today- provided you can afford the price tag. Still, you are definitely getting what you paid for if you opt for this laptop. The system is ideal for both road travel and an office work station in a public area.
