| TBoS's Full Review: Hewlett Packard HP Pavilion N5150 (F1938A) PC Note... |
Even though HP notebooks haven't traditionally been the greatest, the updated version of the Pavilion N5150 is decent P-3 system for under 1800$. The 64MB standard RAM may turn out to be a little inadequate for die-hard websurfers or multimedia freaks like me, but is fairly suitable for students who're looking for the perfect companion for those all-nighters at the library.
I personally use the N5150 with 192MB RAM and the performance kick the extra RAM provides is (obviously) pretty neat. The 13.3" XGA TFT screen is nice and bright and offers very legible text at 1024x768 even though its a teeny weeny bit too small. But then the unit's fairly light and a >14" screen would have made the unit a shade too heavy. The excellent 10GB HDD, 8xDVD, 2 USB, 1 Infra-red, 1 Serial, 1 Parallel and external CD Volume controls (that let you play CD's even when the system is turned off) are other worthwhile features. The system also features 2 Type II Card slots and an in-built modem. So the possibilities for expanding are quite good. And I think I should add here that adding RAM to the system is also a piece of cake and any casual user with the manual can do it in about 15-20 minutes.
The PC speaker is a little annoying and the standard 'branded' Polk Audio speakers are quite nice for the typical Power Point presentation. The the placement of some jacks (The Mic one especially) and the lock slot could have been better. 1 Yr. basic warranty. Doesn't exactly have looks to die for.
But hey, worth checking out. Oh yes and it comes pre-installed with Windows Me so be prepared for some of the usual Windows 95/98 antics.
