Great if it would work for more than 5 minutes!!

My cable modem reminds me of the childhood nursery rhyme that went something like ". . . and when she good she was very very good and when she was bad she was BAD!!"
I think we spend more time on hold with our super crappy cable provider - CableTV Montgomery than we do actually using the cable modem. This is not good for my husband and myself as we both telecommute and spend hours every day online working. I need a reliable provider who will keep my connection up and running 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
We live in Montgomery county Maryland and I think we have the worst cable service in the country - CableTV Montgomery. all it takes is a tad bit of wind or five minutes of rain and our cable modem is flashing orange and we can't use it.
When it's up it's great, fast and wonderful to work with - the price isn't bad - we pay 49.95 a month for the service. of course most months we receive a three page bill with all the credits we get when we can't use the modem!! it was easy to sign up and get service, but you need to be a smart shopper and computer wise or they will rook you with extra fees.
First off you need an ethernet card - they wanted to charge us some ungodly price like $120.00 for the card - when I got done laughing at them I hung up ran to best buy and got the card we needed for maybe $40.00. Next, they will come out and install and set up the modem for you for another $80.00 or more - again, if you can or know someone who can install the card do it yourself and don't grease the pockets of the cable provider. Lastly, they had the nerve to charge me some very high deposit fee for the stupid little box and a piece of cable and the cheaply printed user's guide. that was unnecessary - like I'd keep the box when I finally cancel this service.
If you have a reliable cable provider this may be the way to go, but if your cable service is anything like ours you'll never be using your modem, only complaining to someone why you can't. Our cable service reps are so rude they accuse of being liars and stupid and not knowing how to operate the cable modem - like it takes a degree in rocket science to do that!
It's gotten to the point we have to videotape our modem when it flashes orange to prove the service is out. They offer no real tech support or human on a phone to tell you why the modem is down and they always miss appointments you schedule - which is fine because if they no show me it's money off my bill each month.
I'd gladly pay anything for DSL so I could ditch the cable, but right now we are a bit too far for it to work - we're on the waiting list when it can come to us and I'll gladly say goodbye to the cable modem.
My advice - before getting a cable modem - know your provider or ask lots of people who have a cable modem if they like it and if it works more than 50% of the time. It may not be worth faster speeds to have a service you can't use when you need to use it.
