Big Format Printing on a LOW Budget -- HP 1120C

Written: Dec 04 '99
Pros:Quality, Speed, ease of use, many premium features
Cons:Size, large foot print on my desk

Purchased as a replacement for a lower price piece of Junk (about 8 months ago). I needed a large format (11 x 17) output for some of the work that I do. The hardest part of installing it was getting it out of the box. The software supplied (and extras offered on line) is first class. I use daily for business letters, proposals, drawings & graphics. It has been great.

Not the fastest on the market but decent speed. I have read review that says that text print quality is not great, but I use draft mode for many of my proposals, and even that is very acceptable (and very fast). Color output is great. I am sure that the newer 2500 series gives better text quality and higher speeds but at 3 times the price.

The only real problem which I have had is compatibility with my scanner.
The scanner wants an EPP port and the Printer will not function properly unless it is on an ECP port. On an older computer the solution is to add a second Parallel port. This is probably not an issue when used with the newer scanners (USB or scsi ports).

Features that I really like are: two sided printing; collated multiple copies of multiple page documents (1 or 2 sided, smart zoom (which will print an 8 x 11 document of graphic file -except adobe acrobat files- expanded to fit an 11 x 17 page); and stingy use of ink. Ink cartridges are competitively priced and available from discounters too.

Have had a few problems. Some heavier papers will double feed and jam if you are not careful loading the unit, and jams can be difficult to clear; it can be tricky to get it set up for use with the desired output from my auto-cad program. I have found it a good idea to use the print preview feature for these applications to save time, paper and ink. If I used the apps more I don't think that would be necessary. (Best Quality setting gives plotter like results for the type of work that I do.)

Overall, I have found this to be a great investment.
