| bbulge1's Full Review: Memorex CD-ROM drives |
A little over a year ago, someone had the bright idea to tell my then 5 year old nephew to close the CD drive. Guess what he hit it, resulting in the misalignment of the tray and the gears. This drive was a Mitsumi, which worked great the entire time we had it.
With the Mitsumi broken, we ventured out to the store to get a new drive and picked up a Memorex. To tell you the truth, some stuff about this drive bothered me from the start, such as the second button on the exterior for skipping to the next track ( that is if it's a music CD ). But it wasn't my money nor was the computer really mine ( I just keep it working ).
What I did like was that the drive was quiet and had a rather sleek appearance. Ok. It lasted for *just* over one year. The warranty is one year.
Then, the problems start. It should autoplay, but after it spends in the vicinity of 10 seconds to 1 minute with a blinking light and a noise that sounds as if its having trouble starting, it just stops. An error appears after clicking on the CD icon, "Not ready" or "Empty" or other nonsense. With some CD's it seems to work ok. But even then sometimes the CD icon fails to revert back to its usual generic appearance, keeping the StarCraft or other such icon instead.
I try installing it, and reinstalling it. I read through the directions and the readme files. This drive is just a piece of crap, and that's all to it. Stick with Mitsumi or Sony, good brand products. Get the word out that Memorex is garbage.
By the way I noticed that a number of others have had similar experiences and feel precisely as I do. So I'm not the only one. If someone gave a good rating, give them time. They'll be back to switch sides.
DOWN WITH MEMOREX!
