My Old Dell Keeps Going and Going!

Jan 10 '00

My Dell Dimension XPS P133c is so ancient by today's standards that as a model review this might not be helpful. However, as a review of Dell's products in general it may be useful because this machine still runs beautifully and has never had any hardware or software problems whatsoever during the past four years.

I purchased my Dell for my law office in March, 1996, and at that time it was state of the art. It has a great 17" monitor, Pentium 133 processor, Teac CD-Rom drive, Connor tape back up, floppy drive, 2.1 gig Hard Drive, Windows 95 and Office 95, 16 megs of Ram (yes, only 16), 512 cache, Altec-Lansing speakers and subwoofer, the Dell Quiet Key Keyboard and mouse, Number Nine graphics card and a good sound card of some type that I forget. At the time I bought it I also purchased, for $99.00, Dell's 3 year at on-site service but never had to use it. Would you believe the machine cost almost $4,000!! Technology has advanced incredibly in almost four years and the prices of hardware items have fallen dramatically. Ahhh, the good old days! Before I purchased the Dell I had an original 1984 MacIntosh (how's that for retro!). Nevertheless, my technologically challenged self had no problem setting the Dell up and I was using it almost immediately.

I use my Dell mostly for record keeping, word processing, email and internet access. You turn it on and it is ready in a few seconds, the software loads quickly, and it never crashes. The fan is quiet, the keyboard is comfortable and the machine just plain works! If I want to play a CD the sound is terrific. Video, while not bad, is not as good as today's much faster CD rom drives and DVD players. I have been thinking of asking my techno wiz nephew to give this machine a bit more memory and a snazzy new drive instead of purchasing a new desktop. Besides, I have an up to date laptop too.

Based upon my experience with my reliable old Dell, I highly recommend looking into their products if you are in the market for a desktop computer.
