I found MobShop.com (formerly known as Accompany.com) through PointClick.com, an internet site that pays you to click to sites in either cash or credit. As a former Mercata.com customer, their "group buying" concept appealed to me. The premise behind it is that if you have more people buying an item, then the distributer (Mobshop) can get a better quantity price on it. So, you can pick a price that appeals to you and if enough people also want to buy it, you get that price. If the price falls below your chosen price, you get the lower price.
They have several categories of items to look through including: Autos, Computer Hardware, Computer Software, Electronics, Entertainment, PDA's, Small Business and Sports & Fitness. I have not gone through all the categories to do any price comparisons, but the items that I HAVE looked at have a very competitive price.
Heres how it works:
- You search the site to find the item you are interested in
- They tell you the current price based on the current number of "buyers"
- You can see the different levels of lower prices when there are more buyers
- You can either join in right away at the current price (knowing that you may get an even lower price) or choose to "save a price" if they get enough buyers to sell at that price
- You can also have them alert you when it gets to a certain price or within a certain amount of time before the offering closes.
- If you want to buy it at the current price or at a future price, you go through the ordering process giving them you shipping and credit card information. Therefore, you are committed to purchasing the item either at the current price or at your chosen future price.
- When the offering is over, you will get an e-mail confirmation of your order.
They ship relatively quickly (within a week of offering ending) and they have free shipping for UPS Ground. The free shipping may be a limited time promotional offer, but its been there for at least a few months.
The site is very easy to navigate and they even have a scrolling "hot deals" section on the main page, so you can see a sampling of what they are currently offering.
Right now, I have placed a guaranteed bid for the new Star Wars VHS for $9.95 (cheapest I have found it in town here is $13.95) and have placed "buys" for a future price of $12.95 for a Shawshank Redemption DVD and one for $9.95 for a Matrix DVD. Both only need a few more people to buy it in order for the price to go to what I've selected (check it out - lol)
They also have a "click and tell" section where you can have an e-mail sent to your friends so that they can go to the site and order the item as well to increase the buying power.
Since they are a newer site and don't have a ton of business yet, many items don't go down a ton in price, but as the site gets more recognition and visitors, they will be able to offer super-competitive prices in every area and it will become a must-stop place for avid internet shoppers!!
***** UPDATE *****
The buy-cycles on my movies just closed. I got Star Wars for $9.95, Matrix DVD for $9.95 and Shawshank Redemption DVD for $9.95 (I had put a buy price of $12.95 on this one, but enough people bought it that the price went even lower!!!) Since they have free shipping, I will get a GREAT GREAT deal on all 3 movies. I know where I'm doing my Christmas/birthday/occasion shopping this year!!!
