Pretty decent for AOL

Written: Jul 07 '00
Pros:easy to use, file transfer, voice chat, quick messaging
Cons:advertisements within program, sometimes is very intrusive :/

AOL Instant Messenger is instant messaging software that helped start the craze for internet instant messaging. Currently in version 4.0, a few new features have been added, and it fixes a few bugs that were in previous versions.

I have been using AOL Instant Messenger (called AIM for short) for about 2 years. I have come to enjoy using it to keep in touch with family and friends. Although sometimes it tends to be a bit intrusive, this is an ideal messaging program for someone who is looking for a pretty basic instant messenger program.

What I like about AIM:

AIM has been pretty stable most of the time I have been using it. With a few outages, it is not been to much of a problem.

Messaging - It is very easy to message and chat with people with AIM. It is a lot quicker than ICQ (another Messaging client) when it comes to sending messages. AIM now supports voice chat which is nice, especially if you hate to type. It's also a cheaper way to keep in touch with people, rather than having to pay for long distance phone calls.

File Transfer - Recently added in newer versions, the file transfer feature is really nice for exchanging MP3's, pictures and programs with people online. It is very reliable, and can even be customized to scan files with a virus scanner after completing a file transfer.

Features - AIM has some nice features. You can have a customized News Ticker, as well as ones to track your favorite stock exchanges with. AIM also allows you to set a certain icon which shows up on all of your messages. A great way to help express your personality.

What I did not like about AIM:

AIM sometimes can be very annoying. Mainly when you are in the middle of typing a word document, or when you just want some peace and quiet. When receiving a message on AIM, it will popup right in front of your screen. Personally, this I find very annoying.

AIM can also be pretty annoying when you first use it without customizing some of the options. When you first open it, it will load up the News Ticker automatically. Some will want it, others like myself, find it annoying to have popup right in your face.

If AIM contained no advertisements within the program I would come to like it more. I really do not like the advertisements, but again this is an AOL product so what should I expect ;)

Conclusion:

Overall, AIM is a wonderful program for Instant messaging, chat, voice and file sharing. It is very simple to use, and can be setup for each family member in a household. The advertisements are annoying, but that is just something we'll have to deal with for now. Other than the banner ads, AIM is one spiffy messaging program!
