AMD's PowerNow Technology: A Must Have for DVD
by vicwang | Oct 02 '00
Buying a laptop for watching DVD movies, presumably on those long, boring flights where the only film being shown is garbage you wouldn't even pay a buck to see, is a rather interesting proposition.

On one hand, DVD decoding is one of the...

One more thing I completely forgot about: AMD and Transmeta are said to have come to an agreement to exchange technologies, or possibly even co-develop future CPU's that incorporate AMD and Transmeta technology. There were rumors about it way back in August, although they haven't made the official announcement yet. There were actually rumors for a while that AMD was going to BUY Transmeta, although those rumors have been pretty much confirmed as false. Should be interesting to see what happens!

For more info, there's a couple of good articles at:

Hey Karsin, thanks for the comment. I have heard excellent things about Transmeta's Crusoe chips, but it's too bad so much of the info out there is wildly speculative or flat out contradictory (I've heard power consumption estimates range anywhere from 1 watt to 6 watts, although Transmeta claims 1-2 watts for their notebook chips).

Preliminary benchmark evidence so far has also been pretty inconclusive, with poor Windows benchmarks and excellent Linux benchmarks. Once actual Transmeta laptops get released in the coming weeks, I should be updating this article about them (or maybe even writing an entirely new one).

Also, good point about the other components consuming power too. It also draws question to the claim that Transmeta chips can double battery life, when (correct me if I'm wrong) the CPU doesn't even consume over 50% of the total power in the first place.

As for the mobile Duron and Athlon, word has it that they will only have slightly more power consumption than the current K6-2's, even at .18 micron. Maximum power consumption is said to be below 6 watts, compared to the 5 watt maximum for K6-2's.

Don't forget Transmeta... (Reply to this comment)

Supposedly the TM5400/5600 processors can blow away AMD and Intel solutions in terms of power consumption. I think people should also keep in mind that LCDs, Hard drives, and CD-ROMs also consume a lot of electricity. Battery life will not improve more than 40 minutes or so if these other parts are not improved.

As for Mobile Athlon/Duron - these chips eat so much power and require so much cooling that I doubt AMD can bring them into the mobile segment without moving them to 0.13u and improving PowerNow!.
