I didn't want to like it, but it drew me in.

Written: Dec 14 '99
Pros:Huge game world, fun with friends
Cons:Lack of economy, the other players

As a long-time UO player, I was excited (if a bit skeptical) when I heard about EQ. I signed up for the beta test, and from the beta, I was not very impressed. I found it to be lacking in so many ways. I didn't purchase it when it was released in March '99.

Jump ahead to June. I was bored, and some friends (both real-life and online) convinced me to buy it.

"Why not?" I figured.

I've been playing ever since.

EverQuest is an immersive fantasy game, with a lot of variety. The "level system" works well, and the classes are about as balanced as they can get, although someone is always complaining that one class is too weak or strong.

That's not to say it's perfect; it's not. Trade skills are near-useless. It's impossible to make a profit until you spend thousands of platinum pieces developing skill. The game has no economy at all, as items and gold are constantly created but rarely destroyed. People pass their old equipment down to new characters, which creates situations where you'll see a level 1 person in the best armor in the game running around.
