| jendai's Full Review: Compaq iPAQ H3650 Pocket PC |
After seeing this wonderful PDA at CompUSA one day, I decided to buy it after playing with it at the store for over an hour. I was a Palm III user and had been disappointed with it's limited software choices. and the gray screen was starting to bore me.
Upon asking a sales rep at CompUSA for one, he informed me that the iPaq was one of the most popular buys and I would have a very hard time finding one at all. At this point it became a mission. I checked every store in the city and surrounding cities. after about 2 days of calling and searching, I was very lucky to stumble upon a Radio Shack outlet store that had TWO in stock! I ran over there and bought one. They gave it to me at a slightly discounted price...but the unit was in perfect condition. who needs the stupid box anyway? =)
I was leary at first because of the high price, but after I played with it for a while, I couldn't imagine not having one now.
I love the colors on the screen. They are bright and make me feel like I'm using something that requires some intelligence to operate. hehe. The software available for the PocketPC are pretty good. There could be more available, but that will just take time. I like the Windows CE operating system. and the unit itself just looks very damn cool. =)
And I love the fact that you can play MP3's on the iPaq! I've been downloading mp3's for so long that the majority of anything I listen to is in mp3 format. So this was a nice bonus.
the games and applications that are developed for the pocket PC are great. I like the pocket Word and Excel. I can take notes and transfer them to my iPaq and then read them in class during lecture or even *CHEAT* and use them during a test. hehe. =)
Some of the problems I have had with this: (nothing is perfect!)
1) I had the same sync problems that most people had. I've had to call Compaq a few times just to get it going. And I had a very hard time using COmpaq's automated phone system menu. It was so confusing and a few times I got the wrong department after waiting on hold for 10+ min. But once I did get someone that could help, the help was good. The support people were very nice, kind and most important, patient. =D I was very impressed with the level of service I received. After a few problems with syncing, I finally figured it all out and haven't had any major problems syncing.
2) finding accessories for the iPaq. I like to have cute/pretty cases and cool styli...nothing really available. If it is available, people are out of stock. Tried looking on ebay for accessories cheap...no luck. There are some outrageous prices for the iPaq and accessories. OUTRAGEOUS!
3) The handwriting recognition software is weird. It's nothing like Palm's Graffiti. iPaq's software is hard to get used to and hard to use. Sometimes when trying to write specific characters, the recognition software thinks i'm trying to clear the screen and will erase everything I just wrote in. very frustrating. There is 3rd party software that will help with this problem, but at this point and time, I'm having a hard time finding software I like.
Over all I love this little machine. =) I don't regret paying a little extra money to have something that is so cool.
