The desktop was the guinny pig for all designers to throw their designs
and see if anybodyelse throws a monkeywrench at it. IBM laid out the
general hardware and software architechure more than 10 years ago.
But the inspiration for desktop computer or a personal computer for
IBM came from a portable computer called osborne. Now IBM itself has
become one of leading supplier of thinkpad laptop computers. Long time
ago the portability and success of a lpatop computer vendor were limited
by the lack of a reliable screen technology,longlife lightweight battery
and low power and low heat dissipating cpu. IBM has overcome the screen
technology and battery technology and the cpu technology. IBM uses
a new architecture called copperwire technology to manufacture their
cpus and which are very small in silicon realestate and consume less
power and dissipate less heat. The emergence of pentium III as a
ultimate cpu was short lived when intel released its IIIs pentium chips
There were severe design problems and manufacturing problems at 1.1 GHZ
so intel finally decided to with draw and stop manufacturing these chips.
If you stick with IBM they have copperwire alpha chips in the manufacturing line and would be excellent fit for ibm think pads for
the next generation of linux or mac powerbooks or windows 2000 laptops.
The storage technology took a big turn when ibm invented new special
read write heads and and introduced GIANT MAGNETIC STORAGE Technology
IBM has been able to compact several Gigabytes of storage on a very
small platter and which is ideal for laptops. The current technological
innovations from ibm has made their laptops more powerful than desktops.
With large flatscreen the new thinkpads have become the new
laptop desktops.With the introduction of firewire technology you can
build a online snap server into a lap top computer and that way
it will become laptop desktop server with online backup.
