Coolplayer: Fast and Small

Written: Dec 21 '00
Pros:Small, Fast, Requires little system resources
Cons:Currently not many plugins available....

I originally learned about Coolplayer from www.skinz.org, a website about skinning different applications. The first thing that I noticed was the small download, so I had doubts about this players capability. Those doubts were quickly erased once I actually started using it. I'm someone who usually loads and uses more than 10 programs at once. Coolplayer is so light weight that it doesn't tax system resources. The sound quality is surprisingly good, and the author is continuously updating the software to make it more robust.

Another thing that I think is great about Coolplayer is that is a "freeform" skinning program, meaning that the skins can be any size or shape you desire. Because of this you can make extremely small skins that aren't constrained like a typical Winamp skin. Of course, CoolPlayer is lacking many of Winamp's features, such as a vast array of plugins and a large archive of skins. Coolplayer has all the typical mp3 player tools such as a playlist editor, and an equalizer. It doesn't go overkill with options which helps to maintain the small size. Though I still use Winamp quite a lot, I switch over to Coolplayer when doing process intensive tasks such as rendering engineering drawings. If you want to try a small, lightweight mp3 player, CoolPlayer is what you need.
