Living in a small town, there are few options for internet service. AT&T seemed the best of all the evils. While we only have one access number, the connection time isn't too bad. But when it is full or if there is a lot of traffic, you can not get on for hours. We also were never given the option of the $22 unlimited, we were offered 150 hours for $20. We felt robbed when we found out that they changed their unlimited pricing and never notified their customers about it.
You got one email address with your account. Now this account is on the lines of hotmail. You get so much spam that you could hold a bar-b-que for your whole neighborhood and not have to buy burgers or dogs. The speed at which the email is sent and recieved is slow at best and non-existant at worst. I can not tell you how many times email sent through my AT&T account has never reached its destination.
We moved across the state a short way and found that we still would have only one access number, but it was not a horrible connection time, but we needed to update their program. Fine, no problem, until shortly after their convienent download. A virus was attatched to it. A boot virus to be exact. This was terrible! We are so careful to not download items from places so that our system would not get a virus and we got one from them!
Their customer support people were friendly, after we spent 25 minutes on hold waiting for them (each time, each call). They had never even heard of this virus that even Norton's had listed as an old version of the bunny virus from 1997!!! It wasn't even in their virus directory!
Well, after a friend helped us expunge the virus, we found that our system had suffered more than we would have liked and had to re-install most items on it. We definately did not download anything from AT&T. We made them send us a disk to re-install. And we made them credit us for every moment on after we obtained this virus from their site.
After the re-install we kept getting booted quite often, after about 8-10 minutes of being on line. We called them and they tell us that is common with new accounts! We had had an account with them for 2 years at that point! Discouraging to say the least.
While there are problems with AT&T, the email account, possible virus' with downloads, sometimes slow connection, their overall performance isn't all that terrible. They really are the least of the evils in the area we are now in. At least AT&T is affordable.
