Microsoft Word makes my reviews better. It checks my spelling, my grammar and my word count. I can even use a trick or two to have it do the HTML formatting that this site allows in reviews and editorials. There’s even a built in thesaurus for those times when I need to find a better word to express a thought. Although there are many other features, I’ll center this review on those that make life easier for Epinions writers.
Spelling
There are two ways to have Microsoft Word check your spelling. By default, “check spelling as you type” is selected. If you select TOOLS > OPTIONS > SPELLING & GRAMMAR from the menu bar, you can turn this option off. As you type, if you leave it on, Word will place a red squiggly line under every word that it believes is misspelled.
Right-clicking on the word enables you to choose the correct spelling from a list of words that the program predicts you were trying to spell in the first place.
If you choose not to have your spelling checked as you type, you merely have to press the F7 key to activate the manual spell check feature. While typing, you can highlight a single word and press F7 to check the spelling of just that word.
Microsoft Word initially will not recognize many proper nouns, such as place names and family names. You can, however, add any words you want to a custom dictionary and the program will recognize them in the future.
Another helpful spelling feature that Word provides is auto-correct. Word has a built in list of common typos that it will fix for you without any intervention. For example if you type “teh”, Word will automatically change the spelling to “the”.
Grammar
Microsoft Word also can check your grammar. It finds such common mistakes as the misuse of the passive voice, incomplete sentences, duplicate words, and extra spaces between words. As with spell checking, you can have your grammar checked as you type or you may run a grammar check by pressing F7. Grammatical mistakes are highlighted with a green squiggly line.
Thesaurus
To use the thesaurus, highlight the word you want to look up and press SHIFT+F7. The thesaurus dialog box will pop up. If the word you are looking for can be a noun or a verb (e.g., want, bite, look) you can choose the part of speech you want to find a synonym for.
HTML Tricks
If you want Microsoft Word to format your bold and italics follow these steps:
1. Write you review and use the standard bold and italic commands in Word.
2. Save the document as a web page. (FILE > SAVE AS WEB PAGE)
3. From the menu bar, select VIEW > HTML SOURCE
4. When the source window opens, highlight the body of the document, and all of the bold and italic HTML will be there for you to copy.
5. Paste the source code into the Epinions compose review box.
Conclusion
You will find that reviews using proper grammar with no misspelled words will get higher ratings. Using Microsoft Word makes this easier to accomplish. Word is available as a stand alone product or as part of the Microsoft Office package.
