I have been working on PC's since before there were browsers and before there was a world wide web. I have learned alot over the years and have had the opportunity to use several different virus scan programs in my time.
Two that I found to be the most powerful were Norton and McAfee. However, I found Norton to be a major resource hog. They offer pretty much the same level of protection, but McAfee seems to run using far fewer system resources and has never caused my system to crash...the same can't be said for Norton.
Both offer free virus definition updates, but after your subscription runs out, you'll have to manually download the files. That's not a big deal though, as the files are usually only about 1.2 meg in size and download rather quickly. Also, just double clicking the executable runs the updater, so there is no need for any tech knowledge to use and update the virus definitions.
I have never gotten a false alarm from McAfee Antivirus. McAfee Antivirus offers many useful features, like screen scan, e-mail scan and download scan, which automatically scan any downloaded files for infection.
For good anti-virus protection, McAfee is a good solid choice.
