Good Computers, but buyer know thy components

May 10 '00

As a first time computer buyer I just bought an ABS DVD Supreme system in March of this year and I am overall very happy with it. I appreciated the options offered to me as I attempted to customize my system to the tasks I would use it for (games, some programming, movies, MP3s). I first went to the abs website (www.buyabs.com) and messed with some of the possible configurations and computed the prices for them and did comparisons. I highly recommend that you start with the web site first if you intend to customize your computer as this can save time and confusion later when you call to verify (which you must do even if you order online).

When I finally decided what I wanted the sales rep I spoke to seemed pretty knowledgeable about the systems and any possible conflicts with the components I wanted in my computer. One problem which occurred though was that he forgot to ask me which base system I was starting with when I did my configuration. This, of course caused me to stop him and ask him which one he thought I was starting with--once we got that down it was much easier. One thing that I recommend to buyers is that they know their components. The ABS website is very short on information about the components that are offered. This makes it more difficult for the buyer to know exactly what they are getting. If you have the time and inclination you can track down the websites of the manufacturers of the components you are considering and compare the specs but an easier way is to simply find a site like epinions or zdnet or c-net and read reviews of the components.

Once I received my ABS computer I had a little difficulty setting it up. Three problems occurred but were fairly easily fixed:

P1. I couldn't figure out how to get my 2 back speakers to work.
S1. Found a setting in my SoundBlaster which sets the output to 4 speakers.

P2. I couldn't figure out how to change the resolution of my monitor.
S2. Called tech support and reinstalled my Matrox video driver.

P3. The device driver for my network card wasn't set up for my cable modem
S3. Called tech support and after some time we were able to reinstall the device driver and get the card working

Fortunately I have not had a problem since. So in summary my experience was all in all a decent one. For those of you buying a computer ABS is a good choice economically and functionally.
