Pros:great picture, quality build, easy to use
Cons:costs more, two thin lines
i've been used to using trinitron monitors (made by sony) for a long time now, and so any time i look at another kind of crt monitor, i remind myself how lucky i am to have my trinitron. mine does not have the sony name written on the from because i got it from dell. but this does not change the fact that it is still a sony. it still says trinitron up in the left hand corner. anyway, i love the quality of the image on these tubes more than those of any other monitors i've seen, and i've seen a lot of em. if you're going out to buy a monitor by itself, you should definitely get a sony. the screen is almost completely flat on mine (i think it's 100% flat on others, it doesn't really matter when it's this close) and the images are sharp and the colors very contrasty and precise. i have a compaq monitor sitting next to my dell trinitron and the difference is amazing. i couldn't tell by just looking at the compaq by itself, but, after looking at the sony, the compaq's colors look completely off. when i look at a white screen, it looks like a light yellow. and there is barely any contrast on the compaq compared to my sony.
besides the superb image quality, the build quality is tops too. the monitor isn't nearly as flimsy as others that i've seen, especially the compaq. it's on-screen menues are easy to navigate for changing the brightness/contrast/size/movement/color/etc. there are also three easily accessible modes: standard, presentation, and graphics. the standard mode is fine for any regular working, and the presentation mode ups the brightness many times. i use an anti-glare cover so i always use the presentation mode to make up for the filter.
trinitrons do cost more than the average monitor, but since this is the part of the computer that you will be looking at the whole time, i think that it is worth the extra money to make the experience of using a computer more enjoying. and besides the price, the only other problem with trinitrons is that they all have two very very thin and barely noticable horizontal lines going across the screen. this is do to necessary hardware inside the tube so it is unavoidable. but one can only see these lines when looking at a white screen and only if one really looks for them, otherwise, they are unnoticable. for more information on why there are those two lines and also why trinitrons are so much better than other monitors technically, i highly recommend that you look at the review titled "Trinitron's Explained" by member iann.
whether buying by itself or with a computer (especially from dell, gateway or micron), spend the extra cash to get a trinitron. the difference in quality is unbelievable.
