Toshiba Purchasers Beware!!!

Dec 20 '00

A number of months ago JeffB published an epinion about Toshiba laptops and an ongoing consumer class action lawsuit against the company. I was a part of that suit and recently I received a check for $400 and a coupon card for $225 to spend on any Toshiba product.

I flipped through the catalog they sent with the check and the only thing that really appealed to me was the portable Port Noteworthy DVD player. I fly long haul a lot and thought it would be nice to have my own little movie theater with me.

I knew that my laptop, the Satellite 2535 cds was not the top of the line model so I called customer service to make sure that the machine had sufficient power run DVD movies. I was assured that provided I had 300mhz and 64 megs of Ram I could run DVD movies with no problems. I was also assured that the necessary software had been loaded onto my computer with Windows 98. The catalog also stated both of these positions.

I spent the $400 and received the player a few days later.

PROBLEM 1.

I did not have the necessary MPeg compression software on my computer to run DVD movies and called Customer Service to inform them of this. The Rep I spoke to assured me that I had and called me an idiot. His supervisor, who I had to hold for an hour told me the same thing.

PROBLEM 2

I called Port, the DVD player manufacturer and their rep told me that I did not have the necessary software but they could sell it to me for another $40.

PROBLEM 3

I borrowed a DVD compressor CD from a friend and loaded the program. I was able to play DVD movies but the pictures were so shaky and staggered that it was impossible to watch without getting a killer headache.

PROBLEM 4

I emailed customer service at both Toshiba and Port and they eventually sent me the Media Matics software which should have been on my machine in the first place. This program would not even load and it crashed windows every time I tried to run a movie!

PROBLEM 5

I called Toshiba again and after being on hold and transferred in circles for 2 hours, I was transferred to a voicemail box where I left an angry message….still no call back 2 weeks later!

PROBLEM 6

I called Port again and finally started to get closer to the truth. A customer Service rep told me ..off the record…that my machine was nowhere near powerful enough to run DVD movies and that Toshiba should not be marketing their DVD player product to me in their catalog.

PROBLEM 7

Armed with this information I called Toshiba one more time. This time I received first class customer service, no transfers, no mail boxes, no run around. YESSIR we will issue you a full refund right away sir, FedEx will be there tomorrow to collect the player sir, sorry for the inconvenience sir! BUSTED!!!!

Before you decide to purchase a portable DVD player MAKE SURE you have sufficient processor power. 300mhz is not enough to run this player, no matter what the manufacturer says.
