| kitty_7's Full Review: Gateway Solo 1100 |
I needed a new computer that was affordable, but came with the essentials that I would need for college.
After recommending Gateway to a co-worker, I decided to check out their web site.
I saw that the Solo 1100 was my best choice. It comes with a V.90 56k internal modem, a 10x-24x cd-rom drive, a floppy drive, Windows 98 second edition, 466 Intel Celeron processor, 12.1 color display, 32 SDRAM, 6 GB Ultra ATA hardrive, full keyboard, touch pad mouse (but you can buy a regular mouse), USB port, parallel port, serial port, 8 cell battery/ac adapter that is rechargable, Microsoft Works Suite 2000 (Word, Works spreadsheet, Publisher, Encarta, Expedia trip maker and address finder, Hallmark Greetings, etc.), Norton Antivirus software, and so much more.
You cannot go wrong with this because you can choose to add a 4 port USB hub (attach it to the USB port on the laptop and you have three addition ports to use), mouse, 3 years additional warranty, LCD warranty (they will replace it twice a year, after the third time it will be 50%).
I also added the Kingston saddle bag (you can use it as a bookbag because it has hiddable shoulder straps) to carry your laptop and everything you need with you. It is a big bag, but it does not look like a standard computer bag, so you have lessened your chance of it getting stolen.
If you do the monthly payment plan like I did, within two years you can trade it in for a new one ! You can also choose to upgrade from the one year warranty, or choose an extra software package and still qualify for the trade in program--I did all three since it was affordable!
It all came to about 2,200 with all the extras ($68.00 a month) from a $1199 base price ($33.00 a month.
I normally use Compaq, but I chose it because of the trade in option. As long as you choose software and accessories that work with Windows 98 and have an empty port to attach it, you can add just about anything to your laptop! It is perfect to write those papers you forgot to finish while you are between classes. You can't go wrong.
