I have been looking around for phone substitutes for years. I used the early ones which were half-duplex and both people had to have the same program and connection would come and go. What I really wanted was PC to phone, so that person at the other end would need NO TECHNICAL skills (most people having mastered the telephone). Phonefree installed in an effortless breeze, testing my speakers and my microphone. Its interface was quite intuitive. I never looked at any help screens. I added users names and numbers using the typewriter keyboard, not some simulated telephone pad. I dialed each number as I added it. I connected every time through my modem, spoke to my party and then was given the opportunity to save the phone number and name with an icon. To dial a party I have already dialed, I click on their icon.
Don't let it start up with windows; it takes half of your screen, but rather click its icon when you want to use it.
