Unlike other Earn Money/Freebies sites, this site is not about putting money in your pocket, but putting where it may do more good.
GreaterGood.com is a portal site to vendors, and, like many other sites out there (search engines, e-zines, and portal sites to name a few), they are paid a percentage when they refer customers who buy something. According to their FAQ, GreaterGood.com is paid anywhere from 6% to 30% of the purchase price of all items bought when a customer arrives at the vendor's site through GreaterGood. Then, GreaterGood pays 50% of those profits to the charity of your choice. They guarantee 5-15% of the total purchase price of all items will go to the charity. The good news is that the price you, the consumer, pays does not go up, and if your charity isn't listed, no problem. GreaterGood will sign them up.
There are other sites out there that use referral fees generated from merchants as a cash incentive to get customers to use them as a portal site. CyberGold, for instance, gets a referral fee and then gives a portion of it back to their members as a sort of rebate. As far as business models go, this one is fairly simple, and is nearly transparent to the user. All you have to do is visit the vendor from GreaterGood's page, and someone out there who needs it will benefit.
