Quality Control ?

I purchased my third laptop after selling off my old ones ( Both were CTX - 166 MMX & K6-2/300 ), and after much research and keeping in mind I had a limited budget, decided to buy an IBM 142U (same as a 1420), I was amazed that it was available for only $1199 retail and looked awesome on paper ;
Celeron 433,4.6GB HD,32MB RAM,24X CD,ATI Mobility w/4MB,13'HPA,56K modem
This was all the functionality that I needed ; from web surfing to playing flight sims, occasionally. I was impressed with the display, you cannot tell if its not an active matrix screen, screen was bright and crisp, although the display is restricted to 800x600. The only problem was that there was a scratching noise coming from the system, unlike that of a fan spinning or the hard drive crunching, I tried to cope with it, even installed a fix from IBM to update the OS, but it got annoying and led me to exchange it for another unit from the store....but alas,
The second unit was a lot quieter than the first one, so I brought it home, but then I started noticing a line splitting the screen in the middle, a characteristic of Dual Scan screens, I tried changing brightness, contrast, it would not go away, and would be very prominent while viewing graphics or surfing the web, and was noticeable in games also - looked like there were two portions of the screen, again I tried coping, but finally gave up and returned the system to the store,
I ended up paying a 15% restocking fee, but at least I am not stuck with the system had I purchased it online for a little less money. Aside from these quality issues, it is still a good laptop, but has convinced me that I would rather save a little more and get a better system from another company....
