Well.. it FINALLY happened. I bought myself a new videocard and decided to go with the Guillemot 3D Prophet. So far, with a few gripes excluded, it's been a pretty bomb card.
First of all, I got this card for a very reasonable price ($209 for card and CD ROM with drivers in a brown box.) And the install was a snap. Just removed my old drivers, popped out my old Monster II 3D Accelerator and Diamond Speedstar A55 AGP, popped in the Prophet, installed the drivers in safe mode ( I already downloaded the updated drivers), restarted and changed some video settings, then BOOM. Ready to rock and roll...
... or not quite. I had to reinstall a few games (Quake III: Arena), because it wouldn't initialize after the change of video settings. Aside from that... no problems.
OK... so how does it perform? Hela-Sweet, in my opinion. Before I wasn't able to play games higher than 16 bit color. Graphics look SOOOOO much better at 32 bit. Everything plays really fast on that video card. I've played Quake III, Driver, Need for Speed: High Stakes, and the Soldier of Fourtune Demo: All were beautiful. I also used the Bleem! PSX emualtor to play some Playstation games. According to a Sega Dreamcast owner I know, he said Tekken 3, using 32 bit color running at 800x600 resolution looked superior to the Dreamcast.
However, I have some complaints. They don't have anything to do with the card per se... but in the marketing of the card. Everyone is saying how cool the integrated T+L (GPU) that's integrated into the chipset... but it hasn't been implemented into ANY current games on the market. On paper, the T+L setup is great and I can't wait for it to be used in the next line of PC games... but as of current it's useless.
Overall, I love the card. If you're running on a Voodoo 2 chipset and want to free up some PCI slots in your computer, then this card is a good buy. I'm sure the T+L chip is going to revolutionize games for the PC. Just give it more time if you have something newer to see what 3DFX has to offer. Those Voodoo 4s and 5s aren't something to ignore...
